Who we work with in the Northern Territory

Growing businesses across the Northern Territory.

Health care and social assistance and public administration and safety are the Northern Territory’s two largest employing industries, together about 35% of its 143,800 jobs (Jobs and Skills Australia, August 2025 data). About 53% of the Territory’s health care and social assistance workers, and 82% of its professional services workers, are in Greater Darwin.

Northern Territory rules

The Northern Territory rules your finance function runs on.

Seven employer rules set by the Northern Territory, each with the instrument that sets it and what it does to your month. Your team works to them every pay run and every close.

Payment falls on the 21st, not the 7th.

Returns and tax are due within 21 days after each month, and the June return carries the annual adjustment, so it is due by 21 July. Because the deduction tapers, every dollar of wages above $2.5 million changes what you owe.

Set by Payroll Tax Act 2009 (NT), s 7A and sch 1

Payroll tax is 5.5% of Northern Territory taxable wages above an annual threshold of $2,500,000. The deduction reduces by $1 for every $2 of Australian wages above the threshold and is nil at $7.5 million. Employers and groups with Australia-wide wages of $100 million or more pay 6.5%.

Payroll Tax Act 2009 (NT), s 7A and sch 1; $2.5 million threshold from 1 July 2025; 6.5% rate from 1 July 2026.

The Territory entitlement is larger than most.

At 13 weeks for 10 years it outruns most states, and the liability can fall due from year seven, so it belongs in your balance sheet before it is triggered.

Set by Long Service Leave Act 1981 (NT), ss 8 and 10

13 weeks of paid leave after 10 years of continuous service (1.3 weeks for each year), then a further 6.5 weeks after each further 5 years. Between 7 and 10 years, pro rata leave is paid for each completed year when employment ends in set circumstances, such as the employer ending it for a reason other than serious misconduct. Building and construction has a portable scheme run by NT Build.

Long Service Leave Act 1981 (NT), ss 8 and 10; current text in force from 14 October 2015.

Two holidays exist only in the Territory.

May Day and Picnic Day fall on days no state keeps, and the evening part-days carry rates of their own, so multi-state pay calendars have to be set territory by territory.

Set by Public Holidays Act 1981 (NT), s 6 and sch 2

Territory holidays include Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday, May Day (the first Monday in May), the second Monday in June for the King’s Birthday, Picnic Day (the first Monday in August), and Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve from 7pm to midnight. Show days are appointed each year by notice in the Gazette, for named parts of the Territory.

Public Holidays Act 1981 (NT), s 6 and sch 2; current text in force from 1 June 2023.

Clean monthly numbers make the statement a check.

The wages you report to the insurer should match your payroll and your books, so the end-of-period statement confirms figures you already trust.

Set by Return to Work Act 1986 (NT), ss 126AA and 130

An employer that is not a self-insurer must hold an adequate policy of insurance whenever it carries on business and employs a worker. Within 28 days of the policy’s issue or renewal, the employer gives the insurer a proper estimate of wages, and within 28 days after each period ends, a statement of the amounts actually paid. Wage records are kept for 7 years.

Return to Work Act 1986 (NT), ss 126AA and 130; current text in force from 25 March 2024.

Registration turns on wages anywhere.

A business with most of its staff interstate can owe Territory payroll tax registration before its Darwin payroll looks large.

Set by Payroll Tax Act 2009 (NT), s 86

An employer, or a group, registers within 21 days after the end of a month in which it paid wages anywhere of more than the weekly threshold: the $2,500,000 annual threshold times 7, divided by the days in the year, about $47,945 a week.

Payroll Tax Act 2009 (NT), s 86; weekly figure from the $2.5 million threshold, 1 July 2025.

One shift can carry two rates.

Evening shifts on those nights need public holiday rates for the hours after 7pm, which the payroll system has to be set up to split.

Set by Public Holidays Act 1981 (NT), sch 2

In the Territory, 24 December and 31 December are public holidays from 7pm to midnight. In 2026 both fall on a Thursday.

Public Holidays Act 1981 (NT), sch 2.

Service returns follow the pay run.

Days worked by registered workers have to be recorded the same way in payroll and in the reports to NT Build.

Set by Construction Industry Long Service Leave and Benefits Act 2005 (NT)

Construction workers registered with NT Build accrue portable long service leave as they move between employers. An employer with at least one registered worker must register and report that worker’s service. The scheme is funded by a levy on Territory construction projects of $1 million or more, not by a levy on wages.

Construction Industry Long Service Leave and Benefits Act 2005 (NT); scheme from 1 July 2005.

How it works from anywhere

Can a team outside Darwin run a Darwin business?

Yes. Visory’s head office is in Melbourne and its team works across Australia, so nothing about the work depends on where your office is.

Your own file

Your books stay in your own Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks file. Your team works inside it, so you see the same numbers they do, whenever you look.

A team you know by name

A dedicated team runs the work, led by a Business Performance Partner. You meet them by video call, and you always know who to ask.

Northern Territory rules, built in

Visory’s head office is in Melbourne and its team works across Australia, with businesses throughout the Northern Territory. Your books and payroll stay in your own Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks file, and your team works inside it with you. Every pay run and every close is checked against the rules on this page.

Business hours, and the platform after them

Your team works 9am to 5pm Melbourne time on business days, all year round, and the Visory platform is open to you around the clock for documents, approvals and your numbers.

Visory Insights

What your numbers should show in the Northern Territory.

Clean books are the start. Every month, Insights turns them into a plain-English report, and a named Business Performance Partner walks your leadership team through what they mean for the year ahead.

The taper’s real rate

On our arithmetic, for a business with all its wages in the Territory, each extra dollar between $2.5 million and $7.5 million costs about 8.25 cents in payroll tax, and $4 million of wages owes about $123,750. Insights shows the effective rate.

The group decides the rate

From 1 July 2026 the 6.5% rate applies where an employer’s or its group’s Australia-wide wages reach $100 million. Your Business Performance Partner builds the forecast on the group’s wages, not the Territory entity’s alone.

A third-week payment

Territory payroll tax is paid within 21 days after each month, while most states want it by the 7th. Insights places each payment in the right week of the cash flow forecast, so neither date arrives as a surprise.

What customers say

In a customer’s words.

“Having Visory as a flexible partner to handle our day-to-day has meant real relief for our CFO. From an economies of scale perspective, the outsourced model is cost-effective compared to bringing someone in-house, and the handoff to our external accountant for tax has been noticeably smoother than it was before.”

Common questions

Questions Darwin businesses ask.

Straight answers about bookkeeping and payroll for a Darwin business, from a team that works remotely.

Does Visory have an office in Darwin?

Visory’s head office is in Melbourne and our team works across Australia, so we support businesses in Darwin as we do everywhere else. A Darwin business gets a dedicated team you know by name, who keep the books and run payroll inside your own Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks file and meet you by video call. Your records stay in your file, which you can open at any time.

What hours does my Visory team work in Darwin time?

Your team works 9am to 5pm Melbourne time, all year round, on business days. In Darwin that is 8.30am to 4.30pm from April to October, and 7.30am to 3.30pm from October to April, because the Northern Territory has no daylight saving. Outside those hours, the Visory platform is your 24/7 access point, so your books and payroll information are there whenever you need them.

Can a bookkeeper who isn’t in Darwin look after my business?

Yes. Bookkeeping and payroll happen in your accounting and payroll software, not in an office, so a remote team can keep a Darwin business current. What matters is that the team knows Territory rules on payroll tax, long service leave and public holidays, and that you know who they are. You speak by video call.

How much does a bookkeeper cost in Darwin?

Visory charges one flat monthly fee for the scope we agree, with no hourly billing and no timesheets. The fee reflects the services you take, from bookkeeping and payroll to Insights, and the volume of work in your business. You get the quote in writing after a discovery call, so you know the monthly cost before you start.

See how pricing works

Do you work in Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks?

Yes. Your team works inside your own Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks file, for the books and for payroll, so nothing has to move to a new system. Pay runs are reported through Single Touch Payroll from that file, and super is calculated with every pay run for Payday Super. Delphi AI, overseen by your team, is there if you choose it.

Can Visory lodge my BAS?

Yes. Visory is a registered BAS agent, so your team prepares your business activity statement from reconciled books and lodges it with the ATO for you. The GST and PAYG withholding figures come from the same Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks file your team keeps current every month. Payroll tax and workers compensation returns work differently: they draw on reconciled payroll.

When does a Northern Territory business have to pay payroll tax?

Once its wages pass $2.5 million a year, with Australian wages and grouped businesses counted. The rate is 5.5%, or 6.5% where group wages reach $100 million, and the deduction tapers to nil at $7.5 million. Tax is paid within 21 days after each month, and each return draws on the same reconciled wages as your books.

How does long service leave work for Territory employees?

Employees earn 13 weeks of paid leave after 10 years of continuous service, more than in most states, and pro rata leave can be payable from year seven when employment ends in set circumstances. The liability builds from day one, so it belongs in your balance sheet. Construction workers have a portable scheme run by NT Build.

Can you run payroll for staff in the Territory and other states?

Yes. Your team runs one payroll across borders, with each employee on the right public holidays and long service leave rules. Territory payroll tax is paid by the 21st while most states want it by the 7th, and a business with wages in several states gets only a share of each threshold. Every return draws on the same reconciled wages.

Do you offer a virtual CFO in Darwin?

Visory has no standalone CFO offer: that work sits inside Visory Insights, which gives you monthly plain-English reporting and structured sessions with a named Business Performance Partner, which covers what many growing businesses look for when they search for a virtual CFO. The person explaining your margin is the person whose team closed your month.
