Who we work with in Tasmania

Growing businesses across Tasmania.

Health care and social assistance is Tasmania’s largest employing industry, ahead of retail trade and construction, and around half of its workers are in Greater Hobart (Jobs and Skills Australia, February 2025 data). In the 12 months to the December quarter 2025, tourism supported 50,800 Tasmanian jobs, 15.6% of the state’s employment and a higher share than in any other jurisdiction (Business Tasmania).

Tasmanian rules

The Tasmanian rules your finance function runs on.

Seven employer rules set by Tasmania, each with the instrument that sets it and what it does to your month. Your team works to them every pay run and every close.

Crossing $2 million lifts the rate on every further dollar.

Wages above that line are taxed at 6.1%, not 4%. Returns are due by the 7th of the following month and the annual adjustment return by 21 July.

Set by Payroll Tax Act 2008 (Tas)

Tasmania has two bands. Taxable wages up to $1,250,000 a year are free of payroll tax, wages from $1,250,001 to $2,000,000 are taxed at 4%, and wages above $2,000,000 at 6.1%. Monthly thresholds are the annual figures pro rated by the days in the month, and grouped businesses share one threshold.

Payroll Tax Act 2008 (Tas); two-band structure from 1 July 2018, unchanged for 2026-27.

The liability can fall due from year seven.

It builds from the first day, so it belongs in your balance sheet before it is triggered, not after.

Set by Long Service Leave Act 1976 (Tas), s 8

8 2/3 weeks of paid leave after 10 years of continuous employment, and a further 4 1/3 weeks for each additional 5 years. Between 7 and 10 years, pro rata leave is payable when employment ends in set circumstances, such as retirement, illness, or the employer ending it for any reason other than serious and wilful misconduct. Building and construction has a portable scheme run by TasBuild.

Long Service Leave Act 1976 (Tas), s 8; 10-year entitlement from 1 July 2012.

Where each employee works decides their holidays.

A business with staff in Hobart and Launceston runs two holiday calendars, with penalty rates and award conditions checked for each.

Set by Statutory Holidays Act 2000 (Tas)

Tasmanian holidays include Eight Hours Day (the second Monday in March) and the King’s Birthday (the second Monday in June). Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday are not statutory holidays, and Easter Tuesday applies generally to the Tasmanian State Service only. Hobart and the south keep the Royal Hobart Regatta (the second Monday in February) and the Royal Hobart Show (Thursday 22 October 2026), while the rest of the state takes Recreation Day (the first Monday in November).

Statutory Holidays Act 2000 (Tas); current holiday list in force from 3 December 2010.

The 60-day statement should match your payroll and your books.

Clean monthly numbers turn it into a check rather than a project.

Set by Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 (Tas), s 97

An employer that is not a self-insurer must keep a policy in force with a licensed insurer. Within 60 days of applying for or renewing a policy, the employer gives the insurer an estimate of wages for the period, and within 60 days after the policy ends, a full and correct statement of the wages actually paid.

Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 (Tas), s 97.

June wages and the full-year reconciliation land together.

The year’s payroll has to be final by mid-July, so the June books need closing early.

Set by Payroll Tax Act 2008 (Tas)

Tasmanian payroll tax returns are usually monthly, due by the 7th. The annual adjustment return replaces the June return and is due by 21 July, or the first working day after when the 21st falls on a weekend.

Payroll Tax Act 2008 (Tas).

Easter weekend pays differently across Bass Strait.

A business with staff in Hobart and Melbourne sets each state’s Easter in its own pay calendar, with award conditions checked for the weekend.

Set by Statutory Holidays Act 2000 (Tas), s 4 and s 6

Tasmania’s statutory holidays include Good Friday and Easter Monday, but not Easter Saturday or Easter Sunday, which are public holidays in most mainland states. Easter Tuesday (7 April 2026, 30 March 2027) applies generally to the Tasmanian State Service only.

Statutory Holidays Act 2000 (Tas), s 4 and s 6.

Each employee’s work location decides the show day.

Rosters that cross October and November are checked against the right municipal area before the pay run.

Set by Statutory Holidays Act 2000 (Tas), schedule 1

The Royal Hobart Show holiday is the Thursday before the fourth Saturday in October (Thursday 22 October 2026) for Hobart and the south. Northern and north-west areas keep their own show days instead, such as the Royal Launceston Show (Thursday 8 October 2026), the Burnie Show (Friday 2 October 2026) and the Devonport Show (Friday 27 November 2026).

Beyond Hobart

Where the rules change across Tasmania.

The same team works with businesses in regional Tasmania. These are the places where a rate, a holiday or a declaration differs from Hobart.

Launceston and the north

Northern Tasmania pays payroll tax as Hobart does, but it keeps Recreation Day and its own show days instead of the Regatta and the Hobart Show.

  • Areas that do not observe the Royal Hobart Regatta take Recreation Day on the first Monday in November: Monday 2 November 2026 and Monday 1 November 2027.
  • The Royal Launceston Show holiday is Thursday 8 October 2026 in Launceston, Break O’Day, Dorset, George Town, Meander Valley, Northern Midlands and West Tamar.
  • In the north-west, the Burnie Show (Friday 2 October 2026) covers Burnie, Waratah-Wynyard and the West Coast, and the Devonport Show (Friday 27 November 2026) covers Devonport, Kentish and Latrobe.

How it works from anywhere

Can a team outside Hobart run a Hobart business?

Yes. Visory’s head office is in Melbourne and its team works across Australia, so nothing about the work depends on where your office is.

Your own file

Your books stay in your own Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks file. Your team works inside it, so you see the same numbers they do, whenever you look.

A team you know by name

A dedicated team runs the work, led by a Business Performance Partner. You meet them by video call, and you always know who to ask.

Tasmanian rules, built in

Visory’s head office is in Melbourne and its team works across Australia, with businesses throughout Tasmania. Your books and payroll stay in your own Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks file, and your team works inside it with you. Every pay run and every close is checked against the rules on this page.

Business hours, and the platform after them

Your team works 9am to 5pm Melbourne time on business days, all year round, and the Visory platform is open to you around the clock for documents, approvals and your numbers.

Visory Insights

What your numbers should show in Tasmania.

Clean books are the start. Every month, Insights turns them into a plain-English report, and a named Business Performance Partner walks your leadership team through what they mean for the year ahead.

The $2 million step

Wages between $1.25 million and $2 million are taxed at 4%, and wages above $2 million at 6.1%. Insights helps a leader see each new role priced at the marginal rate, on top of super and workers compensation.

The apprentice rebate has closed

The payroll tax rebate covers apprentices who started by 30 June 2026 and trainees who started by 30 June 2025. Your Business Performance Partner shows the rebate still flowing for earlier starters and none assumed for later hires.

Seasons in the wage bill

Tourism carries a larger share of jobs in Tasmania than in any other state or territory. Insights shows wages, margin and cash month by month, so a summer peak and a quiet winter are planned for before they arrive.

Common questions

Questions Hobart businesses ask.

Straight answers about bookkeeping and payroll for a Hobart business, from a team that works remotely.

Does Visory have an office in Hobart?

Visory’s head office is in Melbourne and our team works across Australia, so we support businesses in Hobart as we do everywhere else. A Hobart business gets a dedicated team you know by name, who keep the books and run payroll inside your own Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks file and meet you by video call. Your records stay in your file, which you can open at any time.

What hours does my Visory team work in Hobart time?

Your team works 9am to 5pm Melbourne time, all year round, on business days. In Hobart that is 9am to 5pm all year, because Hobart and Melbourne change their clocks for daylight saving together. Outside those hours, the Visory platform is your 24/7 access point, so your books and payroll information are there whenever you need them.

Can a bookkeeper who isn’t in Hobart look after my business?

Yes. Bookkeeping and payroll happen in your accounting and payroll software, not in an office, so a remote team can keep a Hobart business current. What matters is that the team knows Tasmanian rules on payroll tax, long service leave and regional holidays such as Regatta Day, and that you know who they are.

How much does a bookkeeper cost in Hobart?

Visory charges one flat monthly fee for the scope we agree, with no hourly billing and no timesheets. The fee reflects the services you take, from bookkeeping and payroll to Insights, and the volume of work in your business. You get the quote in writing after a discovery call, so you know the monthly cost before you start.

See how pricing works

Do you work in Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks?

Yes. Your team works inside your own Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks file, for the books and for payroll, so nothing has to move to a new system. Pay runs are reported through Single Touch Payroll from that file, and super is calculated with every pay run. Delphi AI, overseen by your team, is there if you choose it.

Can Visory lodge my BAS?

Yes. Visory is a registered BAS agent, so your team prepares your business activity statement from reconciled books and lodges it with the ATO for you. The GST and PAYG withholding figures come from the same Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks file your team keeps current every month. Payroll tax and workers compensation returns work differently: they draw on reconciled payroll.

When does a Tasmanian business have to pay payroll tax?

Once taxable wages pass $1.25 million a year. Wages from there to $2 million are taxed at 4%, and wages above $2 million at 6.1%, with a group sharing one threshold. Returns are due by the 7th of each month and the annual adjustment return by 21 July. Each return draws on the same reconciled payroll as your books.

Which public holidays change Tasmanian pay runs?

Hobart and the south keep the Royal Hobart Regatta in February and the Royal Hobart Show on Thursday 22 October 2026, while the north takes Recreation Day in November and its own show days. Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday are not statutory holidays in Tasmania. Your team sets each employee’s holidays by where they work.

Can you run payroll for staff in Tasmania and Victoria?

Yes. One dedicated team runs payroll across Bass Strait, with each employee on the right state’s public holidays and long service leave rules, including Victoria’s Easter weekend holidays that Tasmania does not keep. Payroll tax is worked out state by state, so every state’s return draws on the same reconciled wages as your books.

Do you offer a virtual CFO in Hobart?

Visory has no standalone CFO offer: that work sits inside Visory Insights, which gives you monthly plain-English reporting and structured sessions with a named Business Performance Partner, which covers what many growing businesses look for when they search for a virtual CFO. For a seasonal business, that means wages, margin and cash read month by month, so winter is planned for in summer.
