South Australian rules
The South Australian rules every pay run works to.
Seven employer rules set by South Australia, each with the instrument that sets it and what it does to your month. Your team works to them every pay run and every close.
Payroll and the books agree every month.
A return and payment are due by the 7th of the following month, or the next business day, and the annual reconciliation by 28 July. Each return draws on the same reconciled wages as your books.
An employer registers once its Australia-wide wages, or its group’s, pass $1,500,000 a year. Tax is nil up to $1.5 million; between $1.5 million and $1.7 million a variable rate rises from 0% to 4.95%; above $1.7 million the rate is 4.95%. It is charged on South Australian taxable wages less a deduction of up to $600,000 a year, apportioned by South Australian share of Australia-wide wages for interstate employers.

The liability grows at 1.3 weeks a year.
That is faster than in New South Wales, Victoria or Queensland, so the provision in your balance sheet grows faster than headcount suggests, and from year seven a resignation alone triggers payment.
Workers accrue long service leave at 1.3 weeks for each completed year of service, 13 weeks after 10 years. After 7 years, pro rata leave is paid when employment ends by resignation, dismissal or redundancy, unless the worker is dismissed for serious and wilful misconduct or ends the contract unlawfully, such as without the notice they owe. Construction and community services have portable schemes.

Evening shifts split in two.
An evening shift on 24 or 31 December is part ordinary time and part public holiday, so rosters and award checks have to split it.
South Australia’s holidays include Adelaide Cup Day (the second Monday in March), Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday, the King’s Birthday (the second Monday in June), Labour Day (the first Monday in October) and the Proclamation Day holiday on 26 December, with Monday 28 December added in 2026 because it falls on a Saturday. From 7pm to midnight on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve is a part-day public holiday.

Choose the premium basis each year.
In the remuneration return you choose last year’s actual remuneration, with no adjustment, or an estimate settled at year end. Clean monthly numbers make that choice a decision rather than a guess.
Employers with workers in South Australia must register with ReturnToWorkSA within 14 days of employing, unless total remuneration for 2026-27 will be under $16,806. The average premium rate stays at 1.85% for a fourth year. An employer remuneration return is due by 15 September each year.

Group structure belongs in the payroll set-up.
A second entity or a common owner can make a business liable earlier than its own wages suggest.
Grouped businesses add their wages together, and only the designated group employer claims the deduction. Businesses can be grouped even when one employs only in South Australia and the other only in another state, and the group’s Australia-wide wages set both the deduction and the rate.
Payroll Tax Act 2009 (SA).A cost in every covered pay run.
For not-for-profit and NDIS providers, worker classification decides who is in the scheme, and gross remuneration per worker has to agree with payroll and the books.
Employers of community services workers register within 28 days of employing an eligible worker, lodge a return each quarter and pay a levy of 2.2% of gross remuneration by the 21st of the month after the quarter: 21 October, 21 January, 21 April and 21 July. Apprentices and trainees are levy-free. Workers take 13 weeks of leave after 10 years across the sector.

A second return calendar.
The bi-monthly return runs on its own timetable, so it needs a place in the payroll calendar next to payroll tax.
Employers of building, electrical or metal trades workers who work mainly on site must register, lodge returns every two months and pay a 2% levy on wages. Workers take 13 weeks of leave after 2,600 service days in the industry.

How your partner worksWhat customers say
In a customer’s words.
“Having Visory as a flexible partner to handle our day-to-day has meant real relief for our CFO. From an economies of scale perspective, the outsourced model is cost-effective compared to bringing someone in-house, and the handoff to our external accountant for tax has been noticeably smoother than it was before.”
Common questions
Questions Adelaide businesses ask.
Straight answers about payroll for an Adelaide business, from a team that works remotely.
What does a Visory pay run for an Adelaide business include?
Your Payroll Officer prepares each pay run with Delphi AI, and you approve it before anyone is paid. The Payroll Officer handles new starters, leave, variations and terminations, reports the pay run through Single Touch Payroll and posts it to your books, so wages, super and leave balances agree every month.
What hours does my payroll team work in Adelaide time?
Your payroll team works 9am to 5pm Melbourne time, all year round, on business days. In Adelaide that is 8.30am to 4.30pm all year, because Adelaide and Melbourne change their clocks for daylight saving together. Outside those hours, the Visory platform is your 24/7 access point, so your payroll information is there whenever you need it.
Do you check award conditions in each pay run?
Yes. Your Payroll Officer sets each employee up on the award or agreement that covers them, then checks penalty rates, overtime, allowances and leave in every pay run. Changes to award rates, such as the annual wage review each July, are applied when they take effect. Questions about which award applies are raised with you before the pay run.
How does Single Touch Payroll work with Visory?
Every pay run is reported to the ATO through Single Touch Payroll from your payroll software on or before payday. Your Payroll Officer checks the report before it goes, and finalises the year’s payroll data after 30 June so employees can see their income statements. The same figures post to your books, so the two never drift apart.
When does super have to be paid now?
Since 1 July 2026, under Payday Super, super guarantee contributions must reach the employee’s fund within 7 business days of payday. Visory calculates super in every pay run, so it can be paid on payday rather than at the end of a quarter, and the books show what has been paid and what is still owed.
How do South Australian payroll tax returns fit with payroll?
Monthly returns and payments are due by the 7th of the following month, or the next business day, and the annual reconciliation by 28 July. Each return draws on the wages your Payroll Officer has already reconciled to the books, so the monthly figures and the reconciliation match.
Does the South Australian portable long service scheme affect our payroll?
If you employ community services workers, yes. Since 1 October 2025, employers register within 28 days of employing an eligible worker, lodge a return each quarter and pay a levy of 2.2% of gross remuneration by the 21st of the following month. Your payroll keeps each worker’s remuneration, so every quarterly return agrees with your books.
How are the Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve part-day holidays paid?
In South Australia, 7pm to midnight on 24 and 31 December is a public holiday, so a shift that runs into the evening is split: ordinary time before 7pm, public holiday terms after it under the award or agreement. Your Payroll Officer checks those hours in the pay run, along with Adelaide Cup Day and the Proclamation Day holiday.
What does payroll have to do with my ReturnToWorkSA premium?
The premium is set on remuneration, so the employer remuneration return, due by 15 September each year, should come straight from payroll. You choose last year’s actual remuneration, with no adjustment, or an estimate settled at year end. Visory keeps remuneration reconciled every month, so either choice draws on numbers you already trust.
