Payroll in Perth

What every Perth pay run covers.

A dedicated team prepares each pay run, checks it, and sends it to you to approve before anyone is paid. Six things are right every time.

  • Awards, applied Pay rates, penalties and allowances checked against the award or agreement each person is on.
  • Single Touch Payroll Every pay run reported to the ATO from your own payroll file, with nothing to re-key.
  • Super on time Super calculated with each pay run and paid on the cycle Payday Super sets from 1 July 2026.
  • Leave that adds up Annual, personal and long service leave accrued in the file, so balances are right when someone asks.
  • Western Australian payroll tax Wages reconciled every month, so your Western Australia return draws on the same numbers as your books.
  • Starters and leavers New starters set up properly and final pay worked out to the rules that apply.

Western Australian rules

The Western Australian rules every pay run works to.

Seven employer rules set by Western Australia, each with the instrument that sets it and what it does to your month. Your team works to them every pay run and every close.

Every dollar above $1 million changes the bill.

Because the threshold tapers, tax rises faster than wages inside the band. Returns are due by the 7th of the following month, and the annual reconciliation with the June return by 21 July.

Set by Pay-roll Tax Assessment Act 2002 (WA) and Pay-roll Tax Act 2002 (WA)

Payroll tax is 5.5% of Western Australian taxable wages once Australian taxable wages pass an annual threshold of $1,000,000. The threshold diminishes for Australian wages between $1 million and $7.5 million and is nil from $7.5 million. Grouped businesses combine their wages, and only the designated group employer claims the threshold.

Pay-roll Tax Assessment Act 2002 (WA) and Pay-roll Tax Act 2002 (WA); $1 million threshold since 1 July 2020; unchanged in the 2026-27 Budget.

A resignation alone triggers payment from year seven.

The liability belongs in your balance sheet as a cash cost, not a contingency, and it builds from the first day.

Set by Long Service Leave Act 1958 (WA)

After 10 years of continuous employment, an employee is entitled to 8.667 weeks of paid leave, then a further 4.333 weeks for every 5 years after that. Between 7 and 10 years, pro rata leave is paid when employment ends for any reason, including resignation, unless the employee is dismissed for serious misconduct. Construction workers accrue portable leave with MyLeave.

The King’s Birthday falls months after the eastern states’ June holiday.

Multi-state pay calendars have to be set state by state, with penalty rates and award conditions checked on each day.

Set by Public and Bank Holidays Act 1972 (WA)

Western Australia’s holidays include Labour Day (the first Monday in March), Easter Sunday, Western Australia Day (the first Monday in June) and the King’s Birthday in late September (Monday 28 September 2026, Monday 27 September 2027). The City of Karratha and the Town of Port Hedland observe the King’s Birthday on a different day. The WA Government has proposed changes to the holiday schedule, and the 2028 dates will be published once confirmed.

Public and Bank Holidays Act 1972 (WA); 2026 and 2027 dates as published by the WA Government.

The declaration should match payroll and the books.

The premium is adjusted to the actual remuneration you declare, so clean monthly numbers turn the end of policy declaration into a check rather than a project.

Set by Workers Compensation and Injury Management Act 2023 (WA)

Every employer must hold workers compensation insurance for anyone the Act defines as a worker, which can include contractors and working directors. WorkCover WA’s average recommended premium rate for 2026/27 is 1.931% of wages, up from 1.823%, and insurers can discount or load it. Estimated remuneration is declared when a policy is issued or renewed, and actual remuneration as soon as practicable after the policy ends.

Workers Compensation and Injury Management Act 2023 (WA); Act in force from 1 July 2024; 2026/27 rates for policies from 4pm 30 June 2026.

The business structure decides the award.

The system that covers you is checked before the first pay run, and again after any restructure, because a new Pty Ltd entity can move staff into the national system.

Set by Industrial Relations Act 1979 (WA) and Minimum Conditions of Employment Act 1993 (WA)

Western Australia keeps its own industrial relations system. Sole traders, unincorporated partnerships, unincorporated trusts with no Pty Ltd trustee, and not-for-profits that are not trading or financial corporations sit in it, under WA awards rather than modern awards. Award-free adults there earn at least the State Minimum Wage of $998.30 for a 38-hour week.

Industrial Relations Act 1979 (WA) and Minimum Conditions of Employment Act 1993 (WA); State Minimum Wage from the first pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026.

The August assessment can arrive as a bill.

The estimated threshold used through the year is checked against actual wages before June, so the reconciliation confirms the numbers rather than correcting them.

Set by Pay-roll Tax Assessment Act 2002 (WA)

Payroll tax returns are monthly where the annual estimated liability is $150,000 or more, can be quarterly below $150,000, and annual below $20,000. A monthly return must be lodged each month whether or not tax is payable. RevenueWA completes the annual reconciliation in mid-August and raises a debit or credit for the difference.

Pay-roll Tax Assessment Act 2002 (WA).

Contractor payments belong in the declaration data.

Payroll and accounts payable are kept in the same file, so the remuneration your insurer asks for can be drawn from one reconciled set of numbers.

Set by Workers Compensation and Injury Management Act 2023 (WA)

WorkCover WA’s approved declaration forms have three sections, for general workers, contractors and working directors. A contractor can be a worker under the Act’s extended definition, depending on the arrangement. Not providing a remuneration declaration when required is an offence.

Beyond Perth

Where the rules change across Western Australia.

The same team works with businesses in regional Western Australia. These are the places where a rate, a holiday or a declaration differs from Perth.

Karratha and Port Hedland

Pilbara employers pay payroll tax as Perth employers do, but the King’s Birthday holiday moves to August.

  • In the City of Karratha and the Town of Port Hedland, the King’s Birthday is observed on Monday 3 August 2026, instead of the date kept in the rest of Western Australia.
  • Monday 28 September 2026 is not a public holiday in those two districts, so a business with staff in Perth and the Pilbara runs two holiday calendars.
  • The two districts can choose different dates: in 2024 Karratha observed the holiday on 5 August and Port Hedland on 12 August, so each year’s dates are checked before the pay calendar is set.

How it works from anywhere

Can a team outside Perth run a Perth business?

Yes. Visory’s head office is in Melbourne and its team works across Australia, so nothing about the work depends on where your office is.

Your own file

Your books stay in your own Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks file. Your team works inside it, so you see the same numbers they do, whenever you look.

A team you know by name

A dedicated team runs the work, led by a Business Performance Partner. You meet them by video call, and you always know who to ask.

Western Australian rules, built in

Visory’s head office is in Melbourne and its team works across Australia, with businesses throughout Western Australia. Your books and payroll stay in your own Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks file, and your team works inside it with you. Every pay run and every close is checked against the rules on this page.

Business hours, and the platform after them

Your team works 9am to 5pm Melbourne time on business days, all year round, and the Visory platform is open to you around the clock for documents, approvals and your numbers.

What customers say

In a customer’s words.

“Having Visory as a flexible partner to handle our day-to-day has meant real relief for our CFO. From an economies of scale perspective, the outsourced model is cost-effective compared to bringing someone in-house, and the handoff to our external accountant for tax has been noticeably smoother than it was before.”

Common questions

Questions Perth businesses ask.

Straight answers about payroll for a Perth business, from a team that works remotely.

Does Visory have a payroll office in Perth?

Visory’s head office is in Melbourne and our team works across Australia, so we run payroll for businesses in Perth as we do everywhere else. Your Payroll Officer is named, works inside your own Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks file and meets you by video call. Pay runs, Single Touch Payroll reporting and super all happen in your own systems.

What hours does my payroll team work in Perth time?

Your payroll team works 9am to 5pm Melbourne time, all year round, on business days. In Perth that is 7am to 3pm from April to October, and 6am to 2pm from October to April, because Western Australia has no daylight saving. Outside those hours, the Visory platform is your 24/7 access point, so your payroll information is there whenever you need it.

Is my business in the WA state system or the national system?

It depends on your structure. Sole traders, unincorporated partnerships, trusts with no Pty Ltd trustee, and some not-for-profits sit in the Western Australian state system under WA awards. Pty Ltd companies sit in the national system under modern awards. Your Payroll Officer confirms your structure with you and sets up pay runs for the system that applies.

Can you run award payroll for a Perth business?

Yes. Your Payroll Officer sets up each employee under the award or agreement that covers the work, whether a WA award or a modern award, with penalty rates, allowances and casual loading applied every pay run. You approve each pay run before it is paid, and Western Australian public holidays are set in the pay calendar.

Do you report through Single Touch Payroll?

Yes. Every pay run is reported to the ATO through Single Touch Payroll on or before payday, from your own payroll software. Your Payroll Officer checks the variations before you approve the pay run, and finalises the year’s data by the due date so employees see complete income statements.

When does super have to be paid now?

Since 1 July 2026, under Payday Super, contributions must reach the employee’s fund within seven business days of each payday, with 20 business days for a new employee’s first contribution. Visory calculates super with every pay run, so it can be paid on that cycle rather than at the end of the quarter.

How often are Western Australian payroll tax returns due?

Monthly, by the 7th, where the annual estimated liability is $150,000 or more, even in a month when no tax is payable. Smaller liabilities can be quarterly or annual. The June return and the annual reconciliation are due by 21 July, and RevenueWA assesses the difference in mid-August. Each return draws on the payroll your Payroll Officer runs.

Which public holidays change Western Australian pay runs?

Labour Day in early March, Easter Sunday, Western Australia Day on the first Monday in June and the King’s Birthday on Monday 28 September 2026. Karratha and Port Hedland keep the King’s Birthday on Monday 3 August 2026 instead. Your Payroll Officer sets each employee’s holidays by where they work, with penalty rates checked against the award.

How are wages declared for workers compensation in WA?

You declare estimated remuneration to your insurer when the policy is issued or renewed, and actual remuneration as soon as practicable after it ends, on WorkCover WA’s approved forms. Contractors and working directors are declared too. Your team keeps payroll and supplier payments reconciled in one file, so the figures are ready when your insurer asks.
